1. Why these three?
Pokut, Sal and Gito sit in Çamlıhemşin district and define Turkey’s cloud-sea photography scene. Two-storey wooden “serender” huts, 2,000+ m elevation and fast-changing fog/sun patterns make them Instagram icons.
2. Pokut Highland (2,000 m)
Access
- 25 km from Ayder (~1.5 hours). First 17 km paved, last 8 km dirt — mud after rain. 4x4 essential.
- Book a jeep tour from Çamlıhemşin if you don’t have a 4x4.
Architecture
- Two-storey wooden serenders: ground-floor storage, upper-floor living.
- Some serenders converted to boutique pensions / rental homes.
- New builds are protected — unauthorized construction is banned.
Stays
- Whole-serender rental: ₺2,500-6,000/night for 2 (seasonal).
- Boutique pension (B&B): ₺3,000-7,000/night.
- Peak July-August needs booking 2-3 months ahead.
Photo spots
- Opposite slope panorama — all serenders visible.
- Dawn cloud sea: 05:30-07:00 (July-September).
- Sunset: 19:00-20:30 (seasonal).
3. Sal Highland (1,950 m)
- 20-min easy walk from Pokut.
- Far fewer tourists.
- Limited pensions / bungalows.
4. Gito Highland (2,100 m)
- 30 km from Ayder; 4x4 mandatory.
- Higher elevation → denser fog + cloud sea.
- Very limited stays; mostly day-trip by jeep.
5. Daily Highland Tour vs ATV vs Your Own 4x4
| Criterion | Daily Tour (4x4 safari) | ATV Tour | Own 4x4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | ₺400-800/person | ₺1,500-3,500/ATV (2 pax) | Fuel + wear |
| Duration | Full day (3 highlands + waterfall) | 1-4 hours | Flexible |
| Coverage | Pokut + Sal + Gito + Palovit | Nearby (Huser/Avusor) | Anywhere |
| Risk | Low (experienced driver) | Moderate (helmet + licence) | Requires skill |
| Recommended | First visit, families | Short adventure | Experienced travellers |
Daily Highland Tour
- 5+ operators in Çamlıhemşin and Ayder, 06:00-18:00.
- Typical route: Ayder → Pokut → Sal → Gito → Palovit Waterfall.
- Early-morning start is critical for cloud sea.
ATV Tour
- 3-4 operators in Ayder.
- 30-min ₺700-1,000; 1-hour ₺1,500-2,000; 3-4 hour ₺3,000-3,500.
- Class B driving licence, 18+.
- Helmet + goggles provided; bring rain gear, closed shoes, gloves.
- Note: Pokut-Sal-Gito is NOT recommended for ATV — distance, steepness, cold. ATV routes mostly go Huser/Avusor direction.
Your own 4x4
- Low-range transfer + AT tyres minimum.
- Bring: spare tyre, chocks, tow rope, first-aid kit.
- Don’t go alone — help may take hours to reach you.
6. Cloud sea — timing
- Season: Late June – mid-October.
- Time of day: Dawn and dusk ±1 hour.
- Weather: Overnight rain → high cloud-sea probability next morning.
- Elevation: Clouds cluster at 1,500-1,800 m; Pokut/Gito at 2,000+ m stay above.
- Apps: Windy or Meteologix to track cloud levels.
7. Practical tips
- Weather changes fast at altitude; dress in layers (tee + fleece + rain jacket).
- Mobile: Turkcell strong, Vodafone drops.
- Take all litter back — waste management is limited at Pokut.
- Night temperatures can drop below 10°C even in July.
- Get local permission for drone use.
