2. Getting there

2.1 By air

• Rize-Artvin (RZV): opened 14 May 2022. 80 km to Ayder, 1.5-2 hours by car.
• Trabzon (TZX): 180 km, 2.5-3 hours. Gulf direct flights land here.
• From airport: car rental, Havaş shuttle or tour transfer.

2.2 By road

• D010 Black Sea coastal highway → Pazar exit → Çamlıhemşin → Ayder.
• Pazar to Ayder ~44 km, 1 hour. Fully paved.
• Istanbul-Ayder: ~1,100 km, 13.5 hours.

2.3 Local transport

• Summer dolmuş (minibus) Çamlıhemşin ↔ Ayder every 30-60 min.
• Taxi Çamlıhemşin → Ayder ~₺300-500.

3. Ayder Hot Springs

• Water ~55°C, rich in sulfur and bicarbonate.
• Recommended for rheumatism, joint pain, some skin conditions.
• Contraindications: first trimester of pregnancy, advanced cardiac disease, open wounds.
• Separate family / women / men pools + massage cabins.
• Quietest hours: weekday evenings after 19:00.

4. Things to do

• Zipline: 400 m, 60 m height. Age 10+, 25-110 kg.
• Horse riding: 1-2 hour tours, guided.
• Rafting: Fırtına River, 40 min away, operators in Ardeşen.
• Jeep safari: Pokut/Sal/Gito combo — ₺400-800 per person.
• Gelin Tülü (Bride’s Veil) Waterfall: 20-min walk, free.
• Huser Highland day trip: 45-60 min walk or 20 min 4x4.
• Ayder Festival: late July annually.

20+ restaurants in Ayder centre. Typical menu:

• Muhlama: butter + cornmeal + fresh minci cheese — breakfast star.
• Butter trout: fresh Fırtına River fish.
• Karalahana dolma: stuffed Black Sea kale leaves.
• Laz böreği: sweet layered pastry.

Price range: muhlama breakfast ₺350-550/person, trout ₺300-500/portion.

6. Accommodation

• Bungalows: 100+ operators, 100% booked July-August with 3-night minimums.
• Hotels/pensions: 60+.
• Peak season (Jul-Aug 2026): jacuzzi honeymoon suite ₺5,000-12,000/night, standard room ₺2,500-5,000.
• Off-season: 40-60% off.

7. Practical

• ATMs: Ziraat, İş, Halk at centre.
• Market: 3-4 full grocery stores + local shops.
• Pharmacy: 1-2 in centre; broader options in Çamlıhemşin (17 km).
• Mobile: Turkcell strongest, Türk Telekom good, Vodafone patchy.
• Clothing: rain jacket + light fleece + trekking boots (even summer). High humidity means quick-dry fabrics are best.
• Pets: some bungalows are pet-friendly — ask ahead.

8. Master Plan status

The Ministry of Culture & Tourism’s 2019-2020 “Ayder Urban Design & Landscape Project” aims to:

• Remove unlicensed buildings,
• Create pedestrian-priority zones,
• Move parking to the highland entrance,
• Return to traditional wooden Black Sea architecture.

The project is in partial rollout through 2024-2026 with some litigation pending. Expect occasional demolition/rebuild works during your visit.

9. Ayder etiquette

• Culture is conservative; quiet, respectful behaviour is expected.
• No loud noise outside horon nights.
• Don’t walk on meadows and pastures; respect grazing livestock.
• Pack out all litter — Ayder’s waste management is delicate.
• Drone use is restricted in some areas; check with the local gendarmerie.

10. Commonly confused

• Ayder Highland ≠ Pokut Highland. Different places; Pokut is 2,000 m and 25 km further in. Watch for marketing that uses Pokut photos but advertises “Ayder”.
• “Ayder honey” is usually NOT Anzer honey. Anzer honey is made in İkizdere’s Anzer village, a different district.
• “Highland house rental” vs “bungalow rental” are different: highland house is often a wooden serender (authentic), bungalow is a modern jacuzzi unit.
