2. Getting there — the fine detail

2.1 By air

  • Rize-Artvin Airport (RZV) — opened 14 May 2022. Turkey's first sea-fill airport, 3,000 m runway. 45 km to Rize center, 80 km to Ayder.
  • Direct routes: Istanbul (IST + SAW), Ankara (ESB); summer extras from Izmir (ADB).
  • Trabzon Airport (TZX) — 80 km away, the main international gateway. Gulf country direct flights (Doha, Jeddah, Medina, Riyadh, Kuwait, Dubai, Sharjah, Bahrain) come through here.
  • Transfers from RZV: taxi ~₺600-900 to Rize center; Havaş-type shuttles ₺100-180; car rentals from Hertz/Budget/Avis plus local.

2.2 By road

  • D010 Black Sea coastal highway: Istanbul-Rize 1,060 km / 13h, Ankara-Rize 820 km / 10h, Erzurum-Rize 240 km via the Ovit Tunnel.
  • Coach operators: Metro, Kamil Koç, Pamukkale, Ulusoy — Istanbul-Rize ticket ₺900-1,500.

3. Ayder — hot springs and horon

17 km from Çamlıhemşin, 1,350 m elevation, Rize's crown jewel. 60+ hotels/pensions and 100+ bungalows; the busiest overnight hub in the region.

Thermal baths

  • Water at ~55°C, rich in sulfur and bicarbonate.
  • Recommended for rheumatism, muscle-skeletal issues and some skin conditions.
  • Quieter hours: weekday evenings after 19:00.

Things to do

  • Zipline (400 m, 60 m height). Horon nights with live tulum music in summer restaurants.
  • Gelin Tülü (Bride's Veil) waterfall — 20-minute walk, free.
  • Huser Highland — 45-60 min walk or 20 min by 4x4.
  • Ayder Festival in late July.

4. Pokut, Sal, Gito — the cloud-sea trio

  • Pokut (2,000 m): 25 km from Ayder; last 8 km dirt — 4x4 required. Wooden "serender" huts; Turkey's most photographed highland.
  • Sal (1,950 m): 20-minute walk from Pokut; quiet alternative, limited pensions.
  • Gito (2,100 m): 30 km from Ayder, 4x4 mandatory. More fog, more cloud sea, even fewer visitors.
  • Cloud sea timing: Dawn (05:30-07:00) and dusk (17:00-19:00) between late June and mid-October.

  • Huser (1,800 m, 4 km from Ayder) — easy day walk.
  • Elevit (1,800 m) — paved access, family-friendly.
  • Kavrun (2,100-2,300 m) — Kaçkar summit base camp.
  • Palovit — 70 m waterfall on the way.
  • Anzer (2,400 m) — famous for Anzer honey.
  • Ovit (2,640 m) — one of Turkey's highest road passes.

6. Fırtına River, Zilkale, Çamlıhemşin

  • Fırtına River: 58 km, Class 4-5 rafting. Season May-September. Operators in Ardeşen offer 2-3 hour runs for ₺1,500-3,500.
  • Zilkale: 14th-15th century castle at 1,750 m, 15 km from Çamlıhemşin. Free entry.
  • Çamlıhemşin: Historic stone bridges (Şenyuva, Mikronomoz), wooden mansions, tulum music culture.

7. Kaçkar Mountains National Park

  • 51,550 hectares, designated in 1994.
  • Summits: Kaçkar (3,937 m), Verçenik (3,709 m), Altıparmak (3,353 m).
  • Classic route: Yukarı Kavrun → Dilberdüzü camp (2,700 m) → Deniz Gölü → summit, 2-3 days.
  • Trekking window: mid-July to mid-September.
  • Certified guide required for summit pushes (₺1,500-3,500/day).

8. Tea tourism

  • Rize produces ~63% of Turkish tea. Harvest in three flushes: mid-May, early July, early September.
  • Visit the Ziraat Botanical Tea Garden via the Rize cable car for panoramic views.
  • Çaykur's main factory (Rize center) offers guided tours by appointment.

  • Muhlama: butter + cornmeal + fresh cheese — breakfast champion.

Which airport is closest to Rize? +

Rize-Artvin Airport (RZV) opened in May 2022 on a sea-fill platform in Pazar, 45 km from Rize center and ~80 km from Ayder. Turkish Airlines and AJet run direct flights from Istanbul and Ankara. For international direct flights (especially from Gulf countries: Doha, Jeddah, Kuwait) Trabzon Airport (TZX) 80 km away is the main gateway.

When is the best month to visit Rize? +

June is the sweet spot — wildflowers bloom, all highland roads are open, and it's before the peak tourist crush. September is the best for cloud-sea photography and much calmer than July-August peak.

Can I reach Pokut Highland in a regular car? +

The last ~8 km are dirt road and turn to mud after rain. 4x4 is strongly recommended. Alternatively, book a jeep safari from Çamlıhemşin for ₺400-800 per person (full-day including Pokut, Sal, Gito).

How much does a jacuzzi bungalow cost in peak season? +

July-August market rate ₺5,000-12,000/night for a 4-person honeymoon suite. Off-season (Feb-Apr, Nov) is 40-60% cheaper. Public holiday weeks typically require 3-night minimum stays.
