1. What makes Anzer honey special?

  • Produced at Anzer Highland (~2,400 m) in İkizdere district of Rize.
  • Source of nectar: 90+ endemic flower species.
  • Caucasian bee breed + high altitude + clean flora = rare worldwide combination.
  • Antioxidant and mineral content far above standard multi-flower honey.
  • Highest diversity of polen in medical purity analyses.

2. Production

  • Hives moved up to Anzer in mid-July.
  • Harvest: late July – early August.
  • Annual volume is tiny — even 10% of demand isn’t met.
  • Unfiltered, raw, cold-chain packaging preferred.

3. Real price range (2024-2025)

GradePer kg
Cooperative wholesale₺8,000 - 10,000
Retail original₺10,000 - 15,000
Certified ultra-pure₺15,000+
Market “Anzer honey” label₺500 - 2,500 (99% fake)

Rule of thumb: Anything below ₺5,000/kg is almost certainly fake.

4. Spotting fake Anzer honey

Physical

  • Real: light amber, intensely aromatic, crystalline structure that melts on the tongue.
  • Fake: overly clear, faint/artificial aroma, very runny.

Packaging

  • Real label shows producer cooperative, parcel/region, harvest date, polen analysis number.
  • Look for the “Anzer Beekeepers Cooperative” seal.
  • Cheap plastic jar + no print label = fake.

Lab

  • Melissopalinology (polen analysis) identifies the source.
  • Available at Chamber-of-Commerce-backed labs.

5. Where to buy

Cooperative sales points

  • Anzer Beekeepers Cooperative (İkizdere).
  • Main shop and official e-commerce site (search for current URL).
  • Stock peaks September-November after harvest.

Direct from producers

  • Some Anzer village producers sell by referral.
  • Producers rarely leave the village Aug-Sep — the best window to visit.

Airport shops

  • Rize-Artvin and Trabzon airports carry cooperative-branded jars. Other brands in the airport are not equivalent in purity.

Avoid

  • Online marketplaces offering “bulk discounted Anzer honey”.
  • Roadside stands, random pensions.
  • Instagram/Facebook “farmer” accounts (mostly fake).

6. Visiting Anzer Highland

  • 40 km from İkizdere centre; elevation 2,400 m.
  • Paved road + last few km dirt; 4x4 recommended.
  • June-July wildflower bloom is spectacular.
  • Very limited pensions; book ahead.
  • Beekeeping observation tours can be arranged via the cooperative.

7. Health & consumption

  • Daily dose: 1-2 teaspoons (adult).
  • Not for infants under 1 year (general honey rule — botulism risk).
  • Store in a glass jar, cool & dry; don’t refrigerate.
  • Crystallization over time is normal; warm in hot water to liquefy.
  • Diabetics: only with endocrinologist approval, in limited amounts.

8. Gift packaging

  • 125g / 250g / 500g jar options.
  • Premium gift set: wood presentation box + cooperative certificate.
  • Air-cargo watch: 100 ml/g liquid limit; glass breakage risk.
  • International shipping: original sealed pack + insured carrier + cool season.
