- Response time in case of breakdown is critical on highland roads.
Do I need a 4x4?
- General tourism (Ayder, Uzungöl): 2WD is fine.
- Pokut, Sal, Gito, Kavrun, Sahara Highland: 4x4 strongly recommended.
- Macahel: 4x4 + experience.
- Alternative: daily highland jeep tour with a local operator.
6. Highland road warnings
- Mud and landslides: after rain even 4x4 struggles; get local info before setting off.
- Rockfall: especially after spring thaw and autumn rain.
- Fog: in Gito and other high spots, visibility can drop to 10 m.
- Winter: most highland roads closed Nov-Apr; some villages on snow-removal routes.
7. By train?
- Ankara-Kars Doğu Ekspresi reaches Erzurum; continue to Rize by bus/car.
- No direct train to the Black Sea coast.
8. By sea?
- No regular passenger ferry.
- No Batumi-Trabzon/Rize sea link.
- Occasional yachts and cruise ships call at Trabzon.
9. For Gulf (Arab) travellers
- Most practical: Doha / Jeddah / Dubai direct → Trabzon (TZX).
- TZX → Uzungöl/Ayder transfers often arranged via hotel + tour packages.
- Arabic-speaking airport transfer staff present in summer.
10. Practical tips
- In car rentals, insist on full CDW + zero deductible.

- Navigation: Yandex Navigation often beats Google on Turkish highland roads.
- In peak season (Jul-Aug), book return flights early — prices jump 2-3x.
